Six cards from a standard 52 card deck are dealt to each player. Each player selects two cards to pass and form another hand called the "crib." The undealt cards are cut and the top card turned up as the "starter." If the starter is a jack, the dealer scores 2 points for "his heels." Next is the play. The non-dealer lays down a card face-up and announces its value. Aces are one, face cards are ten, and others their number value. Play alternates between both players, with each player laying down a card and announcing the sum of its value added to the other cards. The total cannot exceed 31 points. If a player cannot lay down a card without exceeding 31, that is a "go." After a go, the other player plays any additional cards he can. Then a new play begins with the remaining cards with the player who had a go playing first. Points during the play are: 2 points for taking the total to 15 points, 2 points for taking the total to 31 points, 1 point per card in runs of 3 cards or more, and one point for playing a last card in a play. Runs do not have to be played in order, and cards can count in more than one pair or run, as long as the sets are not interrupted. For example, 2-3-4-2 counts as two runs of three for each player and 2-2-2 counts as one pair for one player and three pair for the next player. After all play is finished the hands are gathered back up for "showing." The starter counts as the fifth card for all hands. The non-dealer's hand is shown and scored first, then the dealer's, and then the crib, whose points go to the dealer. If "muggins" is enabled and a player undercounts his score, then the other player can claim the points error. There is no penalty for overcounting your score. The computer is programmed to make a scoring error randomly when muggins is on. Scoring in showing is: 2 points for any cards totaling 15, 1 point for each card in a series of 3 or more, 4 points for a flush not including the starter (except in the crib), 5 points for a flush including the starter, and 1 point for a jack whose suit matches the starter's suit ("his knobs"). A card can count in more than one pair, run, or 15 set. For example, 2-3-3-4 counts as two runs of three and one pair, J-3-3-2-2 counts as 4 sets totaling 15 and two pairs, and 2-2-2 counts as three pairs. First player to 121 points or more wins. If the loser has not reached 91 points he is "skunked" and loses two games. The score is kept on the peg board on the right of the screen.
