This trivia was found out on the ever-inaccurate internet. I have tried to verify questionable facts and update old ones, but sometimes incorrect facts still sneak through. The whole reason I'm putting the trivia up on my web page is to keep an archive of the trivia that goes on the whiteboard at my work.

  • 2007-12-03: Putting candles on cakes comes from ancient Greeks. They worshipped Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon. Part of the Greek celebrations included making moon cakes on the first night of the full moon. They were made from flour and honey, then candles were added as symbolic moonlight.
  • 2007-12-03: When you wake up with a hangover, someone may suggest that you have "the hair of the dog that bit you," which means to drink a bit more. That phrase comes from the Latin "similia similibus curantur," or "like cures like" and was used in early doctoring. People believed that a second dose of what caused the problem could be a cure. For instance, animal bites may be treated with a part of the animal that bit the victim.
  • 2007-12-03: Hoyle wrote his first rule book in 1742, "A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist." Besides Whist, it also listed rules for every game from backgammon to quadrille. He soon became the authoritative source for rules for all card and board games.
  • 2007-12-03: The U.S. Presidental Elections are held in November because the best time for it to occur was at the end of harvest and just before winter, while roads were still clear.
  • 2007-12-03: Julius Caesar's face appeared on all Roman coins during his rule. Because Caesar believed his likeness to be all-knowing, criminal disputes were tried by a flip of a coin ("heads or tails").
  • 2007-12-03: L. Frank Baum named his book "The Wizard of Oz" after the letters that were printed on his three-drawer filing cabinet ("O-Z").
  • 2007-11-28: The song, "You're a Grand Old Flag" was first released in 1906 as "You're a Grand Old Rag" and was soon changed due to the public outcry.
  • 2007-11-28: William Booth founded the Salvation Army in London, in 1878.
  • 2007-11-28: People at funerals wear black out of a tradition that came from primitive times. At those funerals, people would paint their bodies as a disguise so that the deceased spirit would not re-enter the world through one of the mourners.
  • 2007-11-28: A "baker's dozen" is actually 13 instead of twelve. During the middle ages, it was necessary for English law to have very stiff fines for bakers caught cheating their customers on the weight of a loaf of bread. Since loaves were not uniform in size, they gave an extra loaf so that there would be no question whether the customer was getting at least what they had ordered.
  • 2007-11-28: The phrase, "got a lucky break" stems from the tradition of breaking the wishbone of a fowl, where the winner was the one that had the bigger half.
  • 2007-11-28: A stagecoach gets it name from the length of the journeys it would take. Sometimes it would have to travel for days or even weeks and the trip was completed in stages.
  • 2007-11-28: The red stripe that is on a barber shop's pole represents the old practice of bloodletting. At that point in time, you could get teeth filed by your barber along with the regular trimming services.
